Pattern: The 2.5-Hour Hat

© 2010 Rachel Walstead
I made this hat for my grandpa. His bald head gets cold while he watches his John Wayne movies by the fireplace, and he’s been wearing one of my dad’s hats lately. My grandma asked me to make him one of his own.
I made it to just cover his head and the top of his ears. If you want a longer hat, just knit it longer before you start the decreases.

Materials:
About 80 yards of SUPER BULKY weight yarn (more if you want a longer hat) – I used one skein of Lion Brand’s Hometown USA
US Size 10.5 needles : 16” circulars and DPNs or a long circular for magic looping
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker

Directions:

  • CO 48 stitches
  • Place marker and join in round, being careful not to twist.
  • Work 6 rounds in 2x2 rib (K2, P2 around).
  • Switch to stockinette (knit all rounds) until hat measures 4.5”
  • Decrease Rounds:
  • Round 1: *ssk, k2, k2tog* around (32 stitches remain)
  • Rounds 2-10: knit
  • Round 11: *ssk, k2tog* around (16 stitches remain)
  • Round 12: knit
  • Round 13: k1, *k2tog, k2,* k2tog, k1 around (12 stitches remain)
  • Round 14: knit
  • Round 15: k2tog around
  • Cut yarn with 6-8” to weave in, and thread through remaining stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull tight to close the top of the hat. Weave in ends.
